Charming Antique Shield Locket
Charming Antique Shield Locket
Lockets have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. They emerged from jewels that might be more accurately described as vessels - meant to hold perfumes or tinctures or herbs. The locket as a holder of keepsakes - portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like - rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far. This piece ups the sentimental ante with a face decorated in ivy, which was used in floriography (or "The Secret Language of Flowers") to represent fidelity, marriage, and friendship. There remains a blank space for a personal engraving.
Fair antique condition with wear in line with age and use. Closure is secure, as are inner frames, but one original glazed panel is broken in two pieces (secure when held by frame, but could also be removed).
