A gorgeous antique double Albert chain, these are a challenge to find in lengths long enough to wear as necklaces - and at affordable prices! Originally intended for use as watch chains, the t-bar was meant to slide through a vest's buttonhole to anchor the chain, while dogclips at either end were used to secure pocket watches, fobs, keys and the like. While they can certainly still be worn in this way today, we also love to use them as necklaces now - the dogclips perfect to attach charms alone or on a charm ring. Crafted in rolled gold - extremely common for chains (especially men's chains) in the early 20th century, the gold plate is mechanically fused to a base metal core (rather than thinly deposited as in plating). This piece was certainly heavily worn and loved - much of the gold layer has worn away, but combined with the soft patina it still has a lovely tone.
Fair antique condition with wear and patina in line with age and regular use; gold is rather worn throughout. Clasps are secure but one has a small gap until pushed closed (neither opens alone).
Details:
• 12k rolled gold, stamped on t-bar and both dogclips have makers mark SP&S
• 15.5" long
• Graduated links are 5-6.3mm wide and 2.7-3.6mm thick; t-bar is 38mm long
• 32g
