Like sapphires and rubies, spinel was also one of the first gems to be successfully created under lab conditions, with widely available synthetics dating back to the early 20th century. Like their natural counterparts, synthetic spinels are available in many colors and hues, and their durability has made them a popular and affordable stand-in for more temperamental gems, as with this aquamarine-inspired shade of blue. This bold vintage ring shows the use of a synthetic gem at its best - in a shape and size that would be unreasonable in natural material and commands all eyes in the room.
