Richly Detailed Vintage Sarcophagus Charm
Richly Detailed Vintage Sarcophagus Charm
For as long as people have been discovering ancient artifacts, we've been trying to emulate their styles and techniques. We can especially see this every time discoveries were made of Egyptian antiquities - Napoleon's forays into Egypt and the 1809-1826 publication of Description de l'Égypte launched inspired styles in the early Victorian era, and the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamun spurred a bout of Egyptomania in the Art Deco period through mid-century.
In 1972, the British Museum ran a nearly year-long exhibit called The Treasures of Tutankhamun which remains their most popular exhibit to date. This detailed charm, created to capitalize on the reignited interest, may likely have had a tiny mummy tucked within, though if so it's been lost to time. While we hope to continue to see vast improvements in repatriation efforts and far more nuance around plundered history, there's no question that ancient Egypt continues to pique interest around the world.
Good vintage condition. Secure closure, though the charm does not open all the way due to limitations from the shape.
