Tender Monogrammed Antique Locket
Tender Monogrammed Antique Locket
Lockets have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years. They emerged from jewels that might be more accurately described as vessels - meant to hold perfumes or tinctures or herbs. The locket as a holder of keepsakes - portraits (photographic or earlier), hair, and the like - rose in popularity in the 19th century and has been particularly popular during wartimes ever since, as a way to hold close to you those who are physically far. This darling disc features hand engraved initials on the face, and inside a most delicately arranged lock of hair. While many associate hair in jewelry with mourning pieces, it was just as often used to celebrate living loved ones. While the hair is easily removed, we can't promise you won't be haunted if you do so - and you could always place a photo on top!
Good antique condition, with minor denting and a deep scratch to reverse, c.1880. Face engraved CR, with a lock of hair insert.
